gardenias

Margarita Aguilar asks:

Question

How do I take care of a gardenia tree?

Answer

Gardenia can be grown both indoors and out depending on where you live. In warmer climates zones 7-11 (Depending on variety of gardenia) they should be grown outdoors in neutral acidic, fertile, humus-rich soil. The soil in the planting area should be kept moist but well-drained, gardenia will decline quickly if they have wet feet. The location should be partial-shade or dappled light, avoid full-sun locations. Growing indoors use a quality potting mix and top dress or repot when needed in the spring. Place the plant in a bright room with filtered light, ideally in a kitchen or bathroom where humidity levels are higher, if you live in a humid climate any room with bright light will work. During the growing season water regularly fertilizing once a month with a balanced liquid fertilizer (Use as directed on the product). During the winter months limit the water keeping the soil barely moist.
