Mandevilla splendens (Hoop)

Kathleen asks:

Question

I bought Mandevilla (Hoop) at Home Depot with the wrong care tag on it. Can you tell me about this plant. If annual or perennial. How big it will get. When bloom time is, how to take care of it? Thank you.

Answer

Assuming the plat is a Mandevilla splendens a common variety fond in garden centers it is a woody trailing vine grown for the large quantities of fragrant flowers produced during the summer months. The flowers are large trumpet-shaped with rose-pink petals and yellow throats, the foliage is bright green. Mandevilla is a perennial or evergreen in warmer climates, in many cold northern climates they are sold as annual container plants. The soil should be well drained but kept moist, partial to full sun exposure and the plant should bloom all summer.
