Plantings For Small Gardens

Lynne Bowbeer asks:

Question

I have a small yard, fenced with privacy fencing but still need more privacy. What would be a good choice for plantings around the perimeter. I like serbian spruce but am worried that they may become too large.

Answer

Yes, the Serbian spruce (Picea omorika) will grow to be a quite large 50-60 feet tall and 20-25 feet wide. Might not be the best selection for a small yard.

In your situation I would lean more toward shrubs that can be pruned and shaped into a hedge, here are a few.

- California Privet, Ligustrum ovalifolium
- Firethorn, Pyracantha coccinea
- Arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis and nigra (Won't need shaping)
- Lilac, Syringa vulgaris
