Questions & Answers

What is an heirloom?

Susan asks:

Question

Why are some fruits called heirloom? I've heard the term used with apples and tomatoes.

Answer

The term "heirloom" is used when referencing an old variety of fruits and vegetables. Heirloom fruits like tomatoes and apples are making a come back because they are generally more resistant to disease and insects which intern requires less pesticides to produce a great crop. Heirloom varieties also have better taste compared to your average super market varieties because they have not been bread for looks and marketability. If we Americans could get over the idea that produce must look perfect we would find that there are many different varieties out there that taste much better.
