Properity Tree or Money Tree

Scott Quinn asks:

Question

What is the proper care for the prosperity tree? How much water and how much sunlight? When the stalks and leaves turn brown what are we doing wrong? Have had it for 2 years and now it seems to be dying. Help.

Answer

Scott, I believe the plant you are describing is also called a "money tree" which is a tropical plant commonly grown indoors in the US. This tropical will tolerate all types of light however it is best suited for bright indirect light. A well light east or west facing room would do well. These plants are also a custom to fertile soils in their natural environment, I would recommend fertilizing the plant on a regular basis with an indoor plant formula or used a coated time release pellet that will last for months. Watering the plant once or twice a week should be adequate however the only way to tell if the plant needs water is to plunge your finger about an inch deep in the soil, if it feels dry its time to water. Does water seem to move through the pot very fast each time you water? If so it is most likely time to repot to slightly larger vessel.
