Bonfire ashes

Charles Polito asks:

Question

I have a large heap of ashes from my bonfire - mainly burnt hedge clipping, tree prunings, cot down plant material, and want to know if it is beneficial to spread it on either the border, ar on the veg garden.

Answer

Wood ashes can be beneficial in your garden, for best result spread a thin layer over the surface before you till the soil. The ashes will condition the soil as well as add micro and macro elements plants need for healthy development. Too much will raise the alkalinity of your soil so its best to use the wood ash in moderation and around plants that benefit from alkaline soils.

I would not recommend using ashes from anything other than plant debris.
