Colors of Roses Changing

Linda Burrough asks:

Question

What makes my purple & pink roses turn red? What can I do to get the old color back?

Answer

There are a couple factors that can cause the color of your roses to change throughout the season such as variety and growing conditions. Blooms with a small number of pigments like yellow and pink tend to be most stable and remain the same color throughout the season, those with more complex shades like oranges and deeper reds tend to change slightly as they mature. Growing conditions such as soil nutrients, rainfall, intensity of the sun and temperatures also affect the color of the blooms. The same rose variety may look different from one location to another. If it is important to you to have roses with more stable color, consult your local rose society and/or garden center for roses with fewer pigments and consistent color throughout the season. It also may help to consult many sources for similar descriptions which usually indicates a true color. Some roses are prized for their color changing characteristics over the season and from year to year.
