Questions & Answers

Do I need to fertilize my potted plants?

Jane from Colorado asks:

Question

What is your favorite fertilizer for outdoor potted plants?

Answer

For potted plants I recommend two methods a liquid fertilizer added to your watering can each time you water or a time release granular fertilizer with a poly or urea coating(like Osmocote). Both have their advantages the liquid form is good because potted plants are often over watered and much of the nutrients are wash out, by using a liquid fertilizer each time, you are sure to replenish the nutrients that are lost. However it can be less work to add a time release granular fertilizer during the potting process, many last three or more months making fertilizing a snap. But please note that many time release fertilizers last a shorter length of time then the labels state if the average daily temperature is above 70 degree fahrenheit.
