Forsythia cuttings

Andy asks:

Question

Is it true that cuttings can be mashed with a pliers and stuck in the ground to grow?

Answer

I have never heard of this. Hardwoods like forsythia should have cuttings taken from the most recent seasons growth while the plant is dormant and placed in a propagation chamber. A propagation chamber can be made from two boxes. Top box has glass cover to admit light. When closed, interior of box becomes humid. Provide drainage in bottom box to prevent waterlogged. Often synthetically created plant hormones are used to aid in the rooting process. This link should give more details. http://cru.cahe.wsu.edu/CEPublications/pnw0152/pnw0152.html
