Gardening in Lower Alabama

Gail Kush asks:

Question

When to start a vegetable garden in Southern Alabama?

Answer

Gardening in southern Alabama can be year round if you grow warm and cool season crops. In January it time to sow seeds for hardy vegetables like carrots and potatoes other hardy vegetables like lettuce, cabbage, and broccoli can be started in cold-frames. By the end of February you should be able to sow all your warm season vegetables seeds such as tomatoes and peppers. If you start your garden with starter plants instead of seeds your local garden center will guide you through the planting season just by the plants they have available for purchase.
