Ginger

Rita Nelson asks:

Question

I Bought a flowering ginger for the patio....4 years and it never bloomed.

Answer

Flowering or ornamental gingers are heavy feeders, during the growing season they require monthly applications of fertilizer. I suggest using a liquid fertilizer that can be added to a watering pail, use a balanced formula at the recommended rate. A balanced fertilizer will have nearly the same N-P-K (major nutrients) along with micro nutrients. Look for a blend formulated with tropical plants in mind. Flowering ginger do best in moist well drained humus-rich soil conditions, a well drained pot on a patio in full sun maybe drying out too much between waterings. Try not to let the soil dry out completely between your waterings. Go flowers!
