Hibiscus House Plant

Barbara asks:

Question

I have a hibiscus that has little black dots all over the leaves. Some look like they might have wings but they are so small it is hard to tell. I wash they off and they come back. I have a lot of other house plants that do not have these dots. Do you know what they are and how do I get rid of them?

Answer

Sounds like aphids. A mixture of warm soapy water sprayed over the plant regularly for a period of time will eliminate the aphids. Aphids are small soft body insects that bread prolifically and feed on the sap of a plant.

There are also several commercial products available at every garden center that are formulated to kill aphids and other soft body insects.
