hibiscus outdoors

Adam D asks:

Question

Can I plant a hibiscus outdoors in Denver CO? It has outgrown two pots and can't fit on my patio.

Answer

Unfortunately not, that type of hibiscus is a tropical variety and the freezing soil would likely kill it. You can prune back the above soil portion to fit your patio, hibiscus bloom on new wood so heavy pruning could reduce flowers for a while. Hibiscus will tolerate a good deal for pruning but a general rule for all pruning is not remove more than 25% of a plants foliage in a given season.
