Question

How often do I water my indoor plants and how much?

All houseplants have slightly different water requirements due to species, time of year, sunlight and many other factors that is why there is no cut and dry answer to your question. There are many things to consider when determining when and how much to water. All plants indoors or out slow down there metabolic rate during the winter months and require less water and nutrients. Houseplant placed in direct sun will require more frequent watering. Tropical will plants will require more water than a succulent arrangement. Lets Assume all factors are the same for a minute; well-drained soil, the appropriate size pot with bright indirect sun. The plants should be watered when the top 1 inch of the soil feels dry. You can check this easily by pushing your finger down into the soil. Not
Each time you water make sure you thoroughly wet the soil and avoid small infrequent amounts. It is better to error on the side of under watering rather than overwatering, the most common cause of houseplant decline is excess water which will lead to root rot and eventually death. In general most houseplants will do well with weekly thorough watering but let your fingers be the judge. Water succulents every other week. Flowering plant often require slightly more frequent watering. Always look for the signs your plants give off. Does it look limp does the soil feel dry? (Not enough) Are the tips of the leaves dying back or turning brown? (Not enough) Are the leave yellowing? (Too much). These are exact rules for all plants but work more often than not. Over time you will begin to know each plant and how it prefers to be watered.
Planters with no drain holes are never a good idea with the exception a very few plants.
