My lucky bamboo has started to die!

Katie asks:

Question

My bamboo has started to die if I cut the green part will they grow roots and still live?

Answer

They will eventually grow roots but in my experience there could be a loss of a few canes. I personally tried this with a group of 11 canes that I have had for nearly 10 years, the bottom inch or 2 began to rot so I pruned them off. The roots eventually grew back but the foliage is very slow to recover, one cane eventually died. If you decide to make the cut use a good pair of clean pruners to make the cut or the canes will crack lengthwise.
