Planting Tulip Bulbs

Sandi asks:

Question

Is it to late to plant bulbs now for spring-Tulips?

Answer

Tulip bulbs should be planted in fall to early winter or when the soil temperature drops below 60 degrees, this of course will depend on your climate zone and mother nature. Tulips are well suited for cold winters, in fact the bulbs need a prolonged dip in temperature to develop properly and bloom in the spring. It is possible to trick bulbs by placing them in the refrigerator for at least 6 weeks to simulate winter then planting them in the ground in January or February. There are other great bulbs and tubers that can be planted in the spring for a summer bloom like Alliums, Amaryllis, Dahlia, Day Lilies and a number of others.
