sleeping plants

Brad asks:

Question

I am wondering when at night plants go to "sleep" if it is actually at sunset or would it be during the civil twilight?Appreciate the feedback thanks.

Answer

The photosynthesis process of plants slowly shuts down as the sunlight fades rather than a quick on and off. During the growing season plants never fully go to "sleep" or shut down, throughout the night they continue to respire (carbohydrates made during the day are converted to energy). Unlike photosynthesis, respiration does not depend on light, so it occurs at night as well as during the day.
