Soil enrichment

Wayne asks:

Question

I live in Tennessee, what can I sow this fall and till under in spring to enrich my vegetable garden soil? Thank you

Answer

The industry refers to plants used to enrich soil as a "cover crop" there are number of specialized seed mixes designed for just that. Some the common ingredients in seed mixes include Cayuse oats, Bell beans, Purple vetch and Field peas. The cover crop should produce plenty of vegetative growth to create lots of nitrogen for the following seasons crop. Other cover crops include mustards and a number of legumes. You can find many of these online at garden centers or at a farm supply store.
