Squash and cucumber mildew

Flo asks:

Question

It looks like my squash and cucumber plants have mildew on the leaves. Is there anything I can do or should have done to prevent this?

Answer

Mildew is common in the garden especially in humid locations however there are a couple of tips that can help prevent it, avoid overhead watering (spray heads on sprinklers) and avoid watering in the evening, watering morning allows the heat of the day to evaporate excess moisture way. Additionally any thing that can be done to improve circulation will help. There are chemicals that will also fight mildew however since you most likely plan to eat these I would avoid using them.
