Suspicious Vine

Tselani asks:

Question

This vine popped up and is now growing all over my tree peony. I've googled photos of poison ivy/oak/sumac but none looks like this--especially the white streak like veins. I don't want to touch it. If its poison ivy, how do I get rid of it? It's near other ornamentals in my shade garden.

Answer

It is definitely not poison oak, ivy or sumac they all a different leaf structure with 3 or more odd number of leaflets and red stems. From your photo it appears the unknown vine is growing and attaching its self with tendrils (The curly little stalks corkscrewing and wrapping around things) which poison ivy does not do. I am not exactly sure what species of vine it is however I doubt its harmful.

To remove the unwanted vine I recommend strategically spraying as many leaves as possible with a herbicide containing Glyphosate (Round-up) avoiding contact with other ornamental plants in the area. After a few days the plant should begin to die. Then put on some protective clothing and garden gloves and prune the vine at ground level and remove it from your tree peony. The herbicide is a systemic formula with need to translocate throughout the plant to properly work so after the application give it a few days to work.
