Is there an easy way to get rid of crabgrass?

david lister asks:

Question

How do I kill crab grass effectively? I have tried the fertilizer and the spray regularly.

Answer

Unfortunately there is no easy method. The most effective way to control crabgrass is a two step process which requires manually pulling the weed and applying a pre-emergent pesticide that will stop new seeds from germinating. It is an up hill battle and if your neighbors do not control the carbgrass as well it will soon be back. There are some effective sprays but they do require multiple applications in addition to a pre-emergent. The best time to apply the pre-emergent is in late spring some time around the last frost. Your local nursery will carry crab grass specific herbicides in concentrate that do work but generally are rather expensive. Good Luck Dukes!
