Training Hibiscus

mmexico asks:

Question

Can a firball hibiscus be trained to grow up a trellis?

Answer

Yes, most hard woods can be trained to be on a trellis or as an espalier as long as the plant is young and the limbs are flexible. You will need to select the stems you want to keep and secure them to the trellis or form of your choice. Each year direct the new growth where you want it to grow, removing the growth that does not fit the form. This is the short and sweet of it of course. With enough time the only thing holding you back is your imagination.
