There are nearly 80 species of the clump forming perennials known as Crocus. Most Crocus are hardy to zone 3 however species native to regions closer to the equator may only be hardy to zone 6, check which species will be best in your area. Most species require moderately fertile well-drained soil, some require completely dry conditions during summer dormancy. Full-sun to partial shade. Spring blooming species should be planted in the fall and fall blooming species should be planted in mid-summer. Once planted Crocus self sow seeds after each bloom. Flower color ranges from purple to yellow and almost everything in between. The 6 inch flowers and grass like leaves emerge from bulb like structures called corms.
