Grow wood fern in shade with moist, humus rich, well-drained soil, but will tolerate dry poor soils as well. Burgundy fronds emerge turning green with maturity. Remove dead fronds in winter or spring before new leaves emerge. Will be deciduous in cooler climates or during cold winters. AKA Shield Fern, Buckler Fern
