Best in wet soils in part shade tolerates full sun as long as soils are wet. Will grow in shallow water. Evergreen in warm winter climates. Grows in low, slowly spreading clumps (6-9" tall) can be used in the landscape as a ground cover. Light green, grass-like leaves edged with yellow. Flowers appear in April on thick spikes atop stems rising just above the foliage.
