Azaleas
sallygirl12@ asks:
Question
In christchurch, NZ, when is the best time to prune deciduous azaleas, and can they be cut back hard.
Answer
The best time to prune deciduous azaleas is late winter or early spring. Heavy pruning may result in limited flowering however the plants energy will be diverted to other parts resulting in a denser form. Hard pruning to the down to the main stems is not recommended for azaleas, it opens the plant to pathogens and may take several season to recover. Pruning to remove leggy or damaged stems can be done year round.
