Question

Maintenance? How deep to plant, watering, how to trim????

Answer

I recommend planting most landscape plants 1-3 inches above the soil line (The rootball surface should be raised above the native soil line) to avoid over watering and root rot. As for pruning it really depends on how big you want the shrub to be and what variety butterfly bush you purchased, some will only reach a few feet while others will be 10-15 feet tall and wide. Because butterfly bushes flower in the summer on primarily new wood pruning should be done in the fall to control size and shape. Once established, about 6 moths to a year, Buddleia are rather drought tolerant so a through watering every week is more than enough, but this will also depend on the surrounding landscape and your climate. Plant in full-sun in well-drained soil.
