I have had a cane tree over 3 years and for the first time it grew flowers. How often does this happen?

From the picture it looks like you have what is also know as a Dracaena, either "deremensis" or possibly "fragrans" if there is a strong fragrance in the evening. Both species rarely flower, it happen so infrequently that in the Chinese culture it is thought to be very good luck. Most commonly flowers are produced by old specimens however a decrease in temperature can sometimes cause the plant to flower. The flowers will commonly last for 5-7 days or longer indoors.
