Care of Bromeliads
Question
What is the proper care of bromeliads?
Answer
Bromeliads make a great house plant or in the landscape and are generally easy to care for with these few guidelines.
1) Place in bright, filtered or indirect sunlight. Different types of bromeliads may have different light requirements. Excess sunlight can lead to burning along the leaf margins.
2) Keep the soil evenly moist, but do not over-water or allow the plant roots to stand in water. Adding water to the "tank" (the area between the lower leaves that can pool water) is not necessary however if you choose to water the tank replace it often to prevent rot.
3) Provide good air circulation to prevent disease.
4) Ideal temperature range is between 55-85 degrees, the average home temperate is ideal for bromeliads.
5) Bromeliads rarely need fertilizer, when it is required use a balanced liquid fertilizer at half the recommended rate.
