Center flower stalk of ruebarb
Question
I have 2 ruebarb plants growing for the first time, should I cut the center flower stalks to get more stalks of ruebarb to eat?
Answer
Yes, the flower stalks should be removed as they are seen. Since this is your first year to grow the rhubarb you should know the stalks should not be picked to eat. Nutrients drawn from the sun in the leaves is needed to nourish the roots for the next year's growth. After the first year of growth one light picking may be taken during the 2nd year of planting if the plants are vigorous. After the first 2 years of growth the entire plant can be harvested. When it comes time to harvest you can harvest all at once or take stalks selectively over a 4-6 week period. Once established rhubarb is a very tough plant and will tolerate almost anything.
