Do rose bushes go dormant during the summer?

I have very young rose bushes I thought were dead or dieing, but I recently noticed what might be new life on the branches. Do rose bushes go dorment at a time during the summer? Thank you.
Answer
No generally roses do not go dormant during the summer however many things can lead to leaf drop causing then to appear dormant. First off I would check the soil moisture at the base of the plant by sticking your finger in about 2 inches if it dry they most likely need water. Sever drought stress can lead to leaf drop, this is the plants way to stop water loss through the permeable membrane of the leaf surface. Over watering can also lead to disease problems which may cause leaf drop. High humidity and spray irrigation can spread Black Spot a common disease found on roses which in sever cases will cause defoliation on the bush. I would first make sure the plants are receiving the right amount of water, remember inconsistent watering can lead to root death and eventually the plant. Next prune out the dead canes (twigs) you should be able to tell living from dead, the dead will be black or dark brown and be brittle to the touch. Give it some time roses are very hardy.
