Forsythia bush

Margaret Shaw asks:

Question

My forsythia bushes didn't bloom this spring, what could have caused this?

Answer

Did the forsythia put out a good amount of leaves on new growth? Using a high nitrogen fertilizer around forsythia or a lawn near the shrub can cause large amounts of new foliage and twig growth but no flowers the following season. Avoid fertilizers with high N. It is also possible a cold front killed the flowers when they were just beginning to develop and the frost caused the flowers to drop. Did other forsythia in you area bloom?
