hass avocados trees
Question
When planting a 6ft. to 8ft. hass avocado tree should I plant two or three with about 8-10 ft. space between each tree so they produce, pollinate, whatever the tree needs to live grow healthy?
Answer
Avocado trees can reach sizes of 30-40 feet, the size can be controlled to some extent by seasonal pruning. In commercial settings avocado trees are planted 20-25 feet apart, in a home landscape or garden choose your location accordingly. Planting holes should be at least 2 feet deep and wide, incorporate enriched soil or manure with the native soil forming a mound to elevate the root ball a few inches above grade. Place much around the newly planted avocado tree to control weeds and add nutrients.
Avocado varieties are divided into two types "A" and "B" depending on the time of day the flowers open and pollen is released. The Hass avocado is considered a type A, for the highest crop yield I would recommend planting one of each A and B.
Plant avocado trees in a very well-drained location overly wet locations will eventually kill the plant. Soil should be kept moist with frequent light irrigation. Mature trees should be fertilized once in the spring and once in the fall with a total of around 1 lb. of nitrogen spread evenly around the rootball. Your local garden center will most likely carry an avocado specific fertilizer blend with all the recommended micro and macro nutrients needed. Young trees should be lightly fertilized.
