How and when to grow garlic
Question
How do I grow garlic?
Answer
Garlic is grown from fattened seed bulbs or "garlic starts". The starts should be planted around 1" below the surface. The Ideal soil for garlic should be deep, fertile and very well drained soil. Poor drainage will lead to root rot. Fertilize the planting area before sowing to provide enough nutrients, most areas will benefit from lime applications. The In most climates around the country garlic can be planted in autumn through to early winter. In warm climates garlic planted in the fall will remain dormant for a few weeks, then develop roots and a shoot as the temperatures drop, growth is fairly slow until temperatures warm in spring. The cold winter temperatures are needed to initiate the side buds that will ultimately grow and swell to become cloves. The plants are ready to harvest when the foliage has mostly died off.
