How To Replant Houseplants

Wanda Lee asks:

Question

I have 5 houseplants that are dying and need to be repotted, how do I repot my houseplants?

Answer

How To Repot A Houseplant In Six Simple Steps:

1) Select the new pot for the plant. The pot should be 4-8 inches larger in diameter and slightly deeper. The larger the less often you will need to repot.
2) Purchase a good quality potting media.
3) Remove the plant from the old pot. Severely root bound plants may not come out easily, you may need to break the old pot.
4) Rough up the rootball with your hands or another gardening tool to discourage circling roots in the new pot.
5) Using a measuring tape (Measure the height of the rootball) add enough soil to the bottom of the new pot, keep the top of the rootball around 1 inch below the top of the pot once potted, this will help when watering. Pack the soil down firmly.
6) Place the plant in the new pot and and add soil around the rootball using a cup or small shovel. I like to use chopsticks with small plants to move the soil around the rootball evenly, firmly pack the soil around the rootball as you go. Once the soil has reached 1 inch below the rim, throughly water the plant. You may need to add a little more soil after a few waterings as the soil settles. You can add a time release fertilizer as you go during this step if you please.
