Japanese maple wont grow
Question
My husband planted a Japanese Maple in his sand garden but it won't grow, it has one small branch left with small leaves and it only gets afternoon sun. What can I do to get it to grow?
Answer
Japanese Maple trees require moist well drained soil rich in organic matter, the soil should be dark and have good water holding capacity. Depending on your location afternoon sun should be okay however in hot climates such as zones 8 and above the afternoon sun may burn the foliage of Japanese Maples. A "sand" garden my not be the best location for a plant that requires plenty of water and shade the majority of the day. I would consider transplanting the tree to a more suitable location. Japanese Maples do great in pots with regular fertilizer and water.
