Levels of soil succesion

Bella Parker asks:

Question

How does plant growth change in soils that vary in the level of succession? (ex. sand vs. rock vs. regular dirt)

Answer

Because soil is one of the main building blocks of an areas ecology the quality of nutrients in the soil affect the plant community which it supports. As soil nutrients develop over time from the decomposition of plant matter, an area can begin to support larger more advanced species of plants as organic matter increases for example grasses to shrubs then forests. On a smaller level individual plants may become dwarfed or grow beyond their normal growth patterns depending on the nutrients available in the soil in which they are grown, in extreme conditions where soil is devoid of organic matter most plants will not survive without help.
