Lilac Shrub Won't Bloom
brigettemccloud@ asks:
Question
Why has my lilac never flowered?
Answer
There are two common reasons Lilac shrubs don't bloom; improper pruning and fertilizer.
Lilac shrubs should be pruned in the spring to remove any damaged or dead limbs. Lilac flower on new wood, heavy pruning in the spring can easily remove the dormant flower buds. Any major pruning should be done after the lilac has flowered.
Using a nitrogen heavy fertilizer can lead to bountiful green foliage but will keep the plant from developing flowers. I would recommend using a flowering shrub specific blend of fertilizer.
