Mondo Grass Yellowing

Anette asks:

Question

The mondo grass is planted between stepping stones. Leaves are yellowing although it is watered regularly, any suggestions?

Answer

The yellow leaves could be caused by root rot (Pythium splendens) which often affects dwarf varieties of mondo grass. Symptoms begin as tip burn followed by gradual yellowing and browning. You can check easily by gently pulling on the crown, the crown will easily separate from the base if the plant is affected. Heavy soils and poor drainage promote outbreaks of this disease. The soil-borne Pythium is difficult to control, but there are some fungicides labeled for drench application to mondo grass. Top dressing with compost may also help, because it improves competitive soil microflora populations. It could also simply be over watering, Mondo grass prefers moist well-drained soil however it is rather drought tolerant so you could try cutting back on the water.
