Ornamental Seagrass

Shari Windell asks:

Question

I transplanted my ornamental seagrass and now there are a lot of brown areas, is it dying?

Answer

Most ornamental grasses are quite hardy I would give it some time to recover before pronouncing it dead. Transplanting can be very stressful on plants, the process generally removes between 50-70% of the root system. Because of the root loss it is important to get the plant watered and the soil moist at all times until it reestablishes. Whenever transplanting whether it's a tree or ornamental grass avoid fertilizers with high nitrogen for the first couple months to a year. The high nitrogen will cause to plant to produce foliage when it needs to focus energy on the development of roots.
