Possum grapes
Audrey Reavis asks:
Question
What would cause possum grapes to not produce fruit?
Answer
Vitis rotundifolia, common name Muscadines or Possum grape are dioecious, meaning they have male and female flowers on different plants. The flowers of each sex are borne in short, dense panicles and require cross pollination between one another. If there are no males plants in the area, there will likely be no fruit. Pollination can occur from insects or wind, for the best chance of pollination the plants should be planted 25 feet or closer together. Depending on the location a late freeze could also damage the flowers.
