Repairing damaged Bird of Paradise
Question
I have two Bird of Paradise plants in my patio garden that have been damaged by my dogs. They have broken the majority of the plants leaves by running into them while playing. I have transplanted the plants to large 15 gallon ceramic pots to keep them out of harms way. How can I repair the damaged Bird of Paradise? What should I do to get these plants healthy again?
Answer
Sounds like what your bird of paradise plants need is time and some TLC. Here are some general care guidelines for bird of paradise. The bird of paradise plant prefers bright light, including some direct sunlight to bloom, in very hot climates avoid direct sun during the hottest parts of the day. Keep the soil continuously moist throughout the year, high humidity is preferred. Bird of paradise grows best when winter temperatures are above 60ºF, not a cold-tolerant plant. Bird of paradise prefers a rich, well-drained potting mix. The plants should be fertilized in the spring with slow-release pellets or weekly during growing season with a liquid fertilizer.
Follow these care guidelines and give the plants sometime, they should return to their glory soon enough.
