Roses & Yellow Jackets

Dan asks:

Question

I found yellow jacket nest in the roots of my rose bush and sprayed insecticide to kill the bees. Now the two main branches where the nest was is dryed out and gray, looks dead. Did I harm the plant and will the branches come back?

Answer

Sounds like the insecticide did in fact damage the sensitive roots of the rose bush in your garden, the only thing you can do now is wait and see. Go ahead and prune out the dead looking stems they will not recover. Give the rose bush a good soak once or twice to dilute and leach the pesticides away or remove the infect soil and replace with clean garden soil.

Always follow the directions on all pesticides and fertilizers they are very strong and can damage or kill beyond their target. Excess use of pesticides in the home garden are one of the greatest causes of ground water contamination.
