small suckers off the roots of trees
Jerry Morris asks:
Question
What should you do with the suckers that sprout off the roots of trees like cottonless cotton trees? Can you separate from trees and move them to grow as full grown trees?
Answer
The suckers should be removed as quickly as possible, because as their name suggests they suck the water and nutrients away from the main tree. The suckers often appear because of stress or over pruning and in the case of some tree varieties, they are just prone them. Unfortunately they will not transplant successfully because they are growing directly off the roots of the established tree.
