Questions & Answers
Sound barrier plants and trees
peggy asks:
Question
We live in Ohio what are our best options?
Answer
The species of plant tends to be less important than distance from the noise source and the density and depth of planting. For example a 5-6 foot barrier directly next to the road will provide a significant noise reduction. The further from the road or noise source the taller the barrier needs to be. Studies have shown that a mix of evergreen and deciduous plants provides the best barrier, the thicker and denser the more noise will be deflected and absorbed. Options include lilacs, viburnum, pines and junipers.
