Squash

Al asks:

Question

My plants are healthy and growing, with flowers, however there is no fruit. What am I doing wrong?

Answer

Most vining crops including your cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons and squash require pollination for fruit set. This means pollen must be transferred from the male blossom to the female blossom. Pollination by bees is necessary, anything that interferes with pollination of the female flowers will reduce the yield, including cold temperatures, rainy weather or improper use of insecticides that kill bees. High temperatures or high fertility can cause squash to produce only male blooms which results in poor fruit set as well. The lack of pollinating insects in your garden due to insecticides and other environmental factors will lead to small crops.
