Staghorn Fern
Question
My staghorn fern was recently "scrubbed" by an assistant who thought it was dusty. Will it live? What can I do to keep it alive?
Answer
Your staghorn fern should survive as long as harsh cleaning agents were not used to clean the "dust". If the epidermal layer of the leaf was damaged from the scrubbing in spots it may look poor until a new leaf is produced. If the the entire epidermal layer was removed the leaf will most likely die back quite quickly (do not remove it) in which case the plant will need to generate a new leaf to over come the damage. The white, "dust-like" material on the leaves that was cleaned is actually hair projecting from the leaf surface used to reduce moisture loss. Keep your staghorn fern water and wait and see. Staghorn ferns should be watered frequently, letting them dry slightly between waterings. They enjoy very bright light but not full sun.
Hope this helps.
