Sun Tolerance
Question
Why do some plants grow best in full sun and others do not?
Answer
There are couple reasons different species of plants do best in full-sun while others do best in shade. The physiology of a plant plays a huge roll, some plants have thicker cell walls with a thicker waxier cuticle which reduces water loss when exposed to a full day of sunshine. Additionally a plants physiological response to the surrounding environment also affect its ability to handle full-sun conditions. As photosynthesis takes place plants respire which releases water through small cell on leaves called stoma, many plants that do best in full-sun are better suited to manage water loss through the stoma. The other major factor is humans, we like to grow plants from Japan in California, Oregon in Georgia and everything in between. Because we grow plants out of their native environment sometimes they may require some protection from the sun because of changes in longitude, latitude and elevation. These are the basics about sun tolerance hope it helps.
