Answer
It sounds like you are describing a sumac tree. Is the tree growing in groups and only reach around 15 feet tall? Here are descriptions of two common sumacs:
Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina) a small tree sometimes grows as a tall shrub. Its irregular crown is made up of a few stout, spreading branches. Stems are stout and densely velvety hairy, pinnately compound leaves are 1-2 feet long, 13-27 leaflets, lance-oblong shape, 2-5 inch in length. Shoots commonly sprout around the main stem creating a thicket.
Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra) grows to 15-20 feet and often grows in thickets around the mother plant. The stem is glaborus, sometimes 3 sided, green to reddish and covered with a waxy film, pinnately compound leaves are 12-18 inches long with 11-31 leaflets, lance-oblong shape, 2-5 inches long.
