Use of Preen

Kelli asks:

Question

Help, I used the wrong kind of Preen (Trifluralin) on an area with edibles (blueberries, huckleberries). Do I need to pull the plants out? Does it "wear off"? What about planting new edibles in the area? I last applied about 3 weeks ago and was just planning to plant an herb garden in the area.

Answer

Trifluralin the active ingredient in the preemergence herbicide Preen commonly has around a 21 day residual once applied to the soil. After 21 days the effectiveness will dramatically wear off, however in cooler climates the residual may last longer. In your situation I would give it a couple more weeks just to be sure the chemical residual has worn off but you should be good to go in no time.
